Does a non-fault accident affect car insurance?

A non-fault accident can still show up in your insurance history. Even when the other side pays, your next premium may not stay exactly the same.

If your insurer recovers its costs from the responsible party, the claim may ultimately be recorded as non-fault. That doesn't force every insurer to ignore the incident when pricing a future policy.

Declare it when asked

Some applications ask about all accidents, claims or losses, regardless of blame. If the incident falls within the period being asked about, include it.

Claim status can take time to settle

A claim may initially appear as fault while recovery is still being pursued. If you're arranging insurance during that period, explain the position accurately rather than calling it non-fault before your insurer has done so.

No-claims discount may be restored later. Where a discount has been reduced while liability is unresolved, an insurer may restore it once recovery is completed. Ask how your insurer handles this rather than assuming.

Keep final correspondence

A letter or email confirming that costs were recovered and the claim was recorded as non-fault can be useful if another insurer asks for clarification.
