How do penalty points affect car insurance?

Penalty points can affect the price of car insurance and, for some offences, the number of insurers willing to quote. The effect depends on what happened, how many points you have and how recent they are.

Insurers ask about convictions in different ways

One proposal may ask about motoring convictions within a stated period; another may phrase the question differently. Answer what is asked rather than relying on a general rule you remember from somewhere else.

The type of offence matters

Three points for a relatively minor speeding offence may be treated differently from a more serious conviction or a pattern of repeated offences.

More points can narrow the market. As points accumulate, standard online insurers may become less competitive or stop quoting. Specialist brokers can become more relevant where the driving history is outside ordinary underwriting limits.

Do not confuse licence endorsement periods with insurance questions

How long points remain visible for licensing purposes doesn't necessarily tell you how an insurer will phrase its disclosure question. The proposal wording is what matters when arranging cover.

Check the details before applying

Make sure you know the offence code, date and number of points. Guessing can lead to inconsistent applications and unnecessary problems later.
