Do I need business use on my car insurance?

If you only drive to one regular workplace, ordinary commuting cover may be enough. Once you start using your own car to visit customers, different offices or other places for work, business use is the bit to check.

Car keys and paperwork laid out on a map beside a parked car

Commuting usually means getting to one normal workplace

Occasional work trips still count as work trips

Using the car only once or twice a month to visit a client doesn't necessarily make the journey private use. Tell the insurer how often it happens.

There are different levels of business use. Insurers can divide business use into classes with different limits and permitted drivers. Do not assume that ticking a generic business-use box covers every commercial activity.

Carrying goods can be different again

Deliveries, courier work and carrying goods for hire or reward can require different cover from ordinary business travel.

Your employer’s mileage payment does not insure the trip

Being reimbursed for fuel or mileage doesn't itself provide motor insurance. The cover still has to be appropriate for the journey.
